Geocaching with Kids: An Exciting Adventure for the Whole Family

Every so often we share with you a tip, trick, life hack, or fact we’ve learned over the years to make traveling, RVing, or making memories with your family just a little bit easier.

Summer Fun Hack - Keep a little box in your laundry room or car and add unwanted kid’s meal toys to it to use for Geocaching trades. They’re usually the perfect size and lots of fun for kids to leave behind for a new treasure.

One of our favorite outdoor activities is Geocaching. We’ve been caching since 2007 and make a point to hunt a few down nearly every place we go. The boys love the larger caches to exchange a few things so we always have little toys and trinkets ready to go. As I was going through the house I picked through some unloved trinkets and used an old Dropps box to hold them as we travel. Then I just refill it every so often with new things. Keeping the box in the activity cabinet reminds us to open up the app and see what’s around.

Are you looking for a fun and exciting way to spend time outdoors with your kids? If so, geocaching might just be the perfect activity for you. Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that involves finding hidden containers, or caches, using a GPS device or smartphone app. It's a great way to explore the outdoors, bond with your kids, and experience the thrill of discovery.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a global treasure hunting game that was first started in 2000. Participants hide small containers, or caches, and then post the coordinates of the cache on a website. Other geocachers use the coordinates to find the caches and log their discovery online. Geocaching has become a popular hobby for people of all ages, with millions of caches hidden all over the world.

How to do Geocaching with Kids

Geocaching is a great activity for kids because it combines technology, exploration, and problem-solving. Here's how to get started:

  1. Create a free account on the geocaching website Geocaching.com.

  2. Use the website or smartphone app to search for caches near your location.

  3. Enter the coordinates of the cache into your GPS device or smartphone app.

  4. Use the GPS to navigate to the cache.

  5. Once you find the cache, sign the logbook and leave a message online to let others know you found it.

  6. If you take something from the cache, make sure to leave something of equal or greater value in exchange.

Tips for Beginner Geocachers

  1. Start with easy caches. Look for caches that are rated 1/1 or 2/1, which are usually smaller and easier to find.

  2. Take a map and compass. While a GPS device or smartphone app is useful, it's always a good idea to have a backup in case of an emergency.

  3. Be prepared for the weather. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks for the kids.

  4. Respect the environment. Geocaching should be a fun and safe activity for everyone, so make sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and avoid disturbing wildlife or sensitive ecosystems.

  5. Have fun! Geocaching is all about the thrill of discovery and the joy of spending time with your kids.

Geocaching is a fantastic way to get kids excited about exploring the outdoors. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a beginner, this activity is sure to provide a fun and memorable experience for the whole family. So grab your kids, your GPS, and hit the trails!
