15 Tips for Packing a Suitcase for Toddlers and Kids for Stress-Free Travel

Traveling with toddlers and kids can be quite challenging, especially when it comes to packing. Whether you are taking a plane, going on a road trip or you’re in an RV, packing a suitcase for your little one can be quite overwhelming. You want to make sure you have everything they need, but you also want to avoid overpacking and carrying too much baggage.

Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently for your next trip with toddlers and kids:

Make a List

Before you start packing, make a list of everything your toddler or kid will need for the trip. This should include their clothes, shoes, diapers, wipes, snacks, toys, and anything else they may need. This will help you avoid forgetting anything important and keep you organized while packing.

TIP: If you’re not sure what you need, start making a list now of all the things you and your kids use daily. Keep a notepad nearby or in an app on your phone. This creates a great checklist.

Organize Clothes by Day

When packing a suitcase for a toddler or little kid, it can be helpful to organize their outfits by day. This will not only make it easier for you to keep track of what they will be wearing each day, but it will also save time when getting dressed in the morning. You can use gallon-size Ziplock bags to store each outfit, along with any necessary socks and underwear, and label each bag with an index card indicating which day to wear the outfit. This will help you stay organized and ensure your child has everything they need for each day of the trip. Plus, you can reuse the bags for future trips, reducing waste.

I did this until my kids entered middle school because it just made the mornings go much more smoothly when traveling. I used the exact same large plastic bags for nearly 10 years!

Pack Extra Clothes

As any parent knows, accidents and spills can happen at any time. That's why it's important to pack extra clothes for your toddler or kid. Pack at least one extra outfit per three days, just in case something gets spilled on or ripped. You can also pack a few extra pairs of socks and underwear, depending on the length of your trip.

TIP: If you start running out of clothes you can easily wash them up in a hotel sink or bring along a Scrubba - this thing has saved us so many times!

Bring a Comfort Object

For many toddlers and kids, traveling can be stressful and unfamiliar. To help them feel more comfortable, be sure to bring along a comfort object, such as a stuffed animal or blanket. This will provide a sense of familiarity and comfort during the trip and can help your child feel more secure in unfamiliar surroundings.

TIP: If your child is especially attached to a stuffy/lovey and you haven’t already purchased a duplicate, do so now! And if it’s small enough, bring it with you on long vacations. There is nothing worse than an inconsolable toddler who lost their stuffy.

Pack Snacks and Drinks

When traveling with kids, it's important to bring along plenty of snacks and drinks to keep them fueled and hydrated throughout the trip. Pack a variety of snacks, such as fruit, crackers, and granola bars, and bring along a reusable water bottle for each child. This will not only help keep your kids satisfied and happy, but it will also save you money on buying snacks and drinks at the airport or on the road.

Bring Entertainment

Long trips can be boring for young kids, which can lead to crankiness and restlessness. To keep your kiddo entertained during the trip, be sure to bring along some toys, books, or games. You can also download some movies or TV shows onto a tablet or phone, which can provide hours of entertainment on long flights or car rides.

Don't Forget the Essentials

In addition to clothes and entertainment, there are some essential items you'll need to bring along for your baby or toddler. This includes diapers, wipes, and diaper cream, if applicable. If your child uses a pacifier, be sure to pack a few extras, along with a clip to keep them from getting lost. You'll also need to bring along any necessary medication, such as asthma inhalers or allergy medication, as well as sunscreen and bug spray if you'll be spending time outdoors.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes can be a game-changer when it comes to packing for your toddler or kid. These small, zippered bags can help keep your clothes and other items organized and separated within your suitcase, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.

TIP: Purchase different colored cubes for the various members of your family - this simple trick can save a lot of hassle.

Bring an Extra Pillowcase

In each of our suitcases, we bring along a pillowcase for our laundry. This helps keep laundry in one spot during the trip and it makes everything easier when we return home and need clean all those clothes. Just toss the pillowcase in the same load!

Label Everything

To avoid losing items or getting them mixed up with other travelers, be sure to label everything you pack for your toddler or kid. This includes clothes, toys, and any other items you bring along. Use personalized name labels like those from Name Bubbles to clearly mark each item with your child's name and contact information.

TIP: Create name labels using the same coordinating colors you purchased the packing cubes in. For little ones who can’t read their name yet, this helps them gain a little independence.

Keep it Light

When packing for your toddler or kid, it's important to keep things light and avoid overpacking. This not only makes it easier to carry everything, but it also leaves room for any souvenirs or items you may pick up during the trip. Stick to the essentials and avoid packing too many unnecessary items.

TIP: Well before you leave, gather up all your purses, bags, totes, suitcases - everything. Then pick up your child in your arms and pretend as if you’re walking through the airport. Is this easy to do? If not, time to eliminate the extra stuff!!

Use a Backpack or Tote Bag

When traveling with kids, a foldable backpack or tote bag can be a lifesaver. These bags are great for carrying snacks, toys, and other essentials while on the go, and they can also double as a diaper bag if needed. Look for a backpack or tote bag with plenty of compartments and pockets to keep everything organized and easy to find.

Plan for Different Weather

When packing for a trip, it's important to consider the weather at your destination. Be sure to pack clothes that are appropriate for the climate, including layers if needed. And be prepared for the unexpected - like the time we camped in July and had to go buy jackets and pants because of a sudden unexpected cold snap. Now I always bring along a few extra layers, just in case.

Bring a First-Aid Kit

Accidents can happen, especially when traveling with kids. Be sure to pack a small first-aid kit with basic supplies, such as band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. This will help you take care of any minor injuries or ailments that may occur during the trip.

I love these Welly kits, they’re cute and fit well into a diaper bag or purse.

Pack a Travel Pillow and Blanket

If you're taking a long flight or car ride, a travel pillow and blanket can make all the difference in your child's comfort. Look for a travel pillow that is specifically designed for kids and a lightweight blanket that can be easily packed in a carry-on bag.

Pack a Few Surprises

To keep your child entertained and excited during the trip, consider packing a few surprises in your suitcase. This could be a new toy, a favorite snack, or a special book. These little surprises can help break up the monotony of a long trip and keep your child engaged and happy.

At the end of the day, packing for a trip with a toddler or small child can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. By following these tips and staying organized, you can make sure you have everything your child needs for a fun and stress-free trip. Remember to keep things light, pack only the essentials, and plan for different weather conditions. With a little bit of planning and preparation, you can enjoy a fun and memorable trip with your little one.
