Breckenridge CO With Kids in Summer and Fall

When the heat of the summer settles into the lower elevations of Colorado we find ourselves desperate to escape up to the mountains in search of cooler temps and a change of scenery. And 9 times out of 10 we find ourselves in Breckenridge. Breck, as most of us call it, is a summer paradise and a great way to spend a day with your family. Though Breckenridge is amazing all year round, summertime is my favorite. Okay maybe fall, too.

You could spend a whole week in the area exploring, but if you only have one day these are our must-do activities with kids:

  1. Take the free gondola ride up the mountain and explore each stop. But if you really want to get in the action go straight to Peak 8 for activities galore. They have an alpine slide, zip line, maze, mini-golf, mountain coaster, and so much more. You could spend the whole day there, but we recommend getting there early and just spending the morning because there is so much more to do! TIP: buy the Adventure Pass or Pioneer Pack online ahead of time.

  2. Have lunch on the mountain at Robbie's Tavern or head back down to Main Street and grab a bite at Breckenridge Brewery.

  3. Walk around the historic downtown Main Street and eat all the gelato, crepes, cookies, and other treats you can find. Downtown offers lots of great shopping and food options. It’s fun to just window shop, but if you’re looking for a great souvenir this is the place to find it. My kids always insist we spend some time at Peek-A-Boo Toys.

  4. Relax a bit at Blue River Plaza and let the kids roam around. If you have little ones that love water you’ll want to pack some extra clothes for them.

  5. Go on a search for the troll! If your kids are okay with a longer walk then keep walking down Main Street to Boreas Pass Road. If not take the free trolley or jump in the car because there’s lots of parking at the trailhead. The very short walk to the troll from the trailhead is accessible to anyone and a fun find for the kids. Be sure to grab the camera for a few fun shots!

  6. While you’re in the troll area visit the fantastic playground at the High Line Railroad Museum and check out all the old trains. If the museum is open then you MUST stop in! It’s free, but donations help keep this place open for everyone.

  7. If you have your bikes then definitely make time for the Blue River Bikeway. This is a gorgeous path that connects Frisco and Breck and is worth it even if you only want to ride (or walk!) a few miles.

  8. End your afternoon with a sweet treat at Mimi & Pin Churros & Waffles. Their hot chocolate is the real deal and the homemade churros are amazing. The owner is super nice and the setting is so sweet.

Breck is an extremely walkable area so we recommend parking in one of the lots that are pretty central in town like Peak 9 or one of the gondola lots and leaving the car all day. If you park in an hourly pay lot make sure you’re paying attention to the clock.

Please be sure to have your water bottle with you and fill it up often - many people don’t believe the locals about altitude sickness, but it is real and drinking tons of water is the best way to combat it.

If you’re looking for a fun place to stay in the area we highly suggest staying at Tiger Run Resort. It’s a fantastic place to camp with your RV or if you don’t have an RV you can stay in one of the adorable chalets available to rent. This unique little hamlet is one of our favorites. Note: all RV’s must be self-contained and they do have an age limit for rigs so be sure to check with them if you have any questions.
