In my opinion, there's nothing better than packing a picnic and hitting the open road and discovering all that Colorado has to offer! Whether you're in search of breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, or a little bit of both, Colorado's many scenic and historic byways offer something for everyone. These routes guarantee to take you through some of the most stunning landscapes and historic sites in the state. So pack your bags, gas up the car, and get ready for an unforgettable journey filled with adventure, inspiration, and fun!

This list combines a few of our favorites and a few that are still on our bucket list:

  1. Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway

    Get ready to embrace the heart of the Rocky Mountains on the Collegiate Peaks Scenic Byway. This 68-mile route takes you through the breathtaking beauty of the Collegiate Peaks, a range of 14,000-foot peaks in the Sawatch Mountains of Colorado. Along the way, you'll see alpine lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, and snow-capped peaks. You will also pass through the historic mining towns of Buena Vista, and Leadville. The byway also offers access to several trailheads, including those for Mount Princeton, Mount Yale and Mount Harvard, which are some of the most popular peaks for hiking and climbing in the region.
